An Invitation to Rest

If you’re feeling exhausted right now, I’m with you. These last few weeks and months have been a lot to take in and show up for. I've been listening, learning (and unlearning), and reflecting on how I can be a better ally to the Black community. With our collective energy and efforts, I pray that something new is blooming— to finally help heal the racial divide in the US, to remind us of our inseparable connection to each other and all living things, and to help us see that what is done to one of us, is done to all of us.

I completely hit a wall last weekend, and well, this is where you could find me (other than in my garden). So in case you need it, here’s your friendly permission slip to take a break.

It’s necessary to rest.
It’s necessary to recharge.
This moment we are in is a marathon and recovery time is required.  

We actually create THROUGH rest. 

The inner fire to protest/ engage/ educate/ inspire/ serve/ live/ love requires space and air to ignite (and re-ignite, over and over again). Rest fuels the personal resilience that will keep fueling the resistance. 

As Audre Lorde said, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation and that is an act of political warfare.” (amen, amen, amen). 

Constant productivity is actually self harm in disguise and contributes to toxic capitalistic burnout culture. So let’s resist that too while we’re at it? 

So protest AND plant flowers. Donate AND nap. Speak out AND spend time in silence. Honor the movement and this moment AND your needs. Resist AND rest. Simultaneously. (And can I also highly recommend hanging a hammock in your house?! Game changer).
